Dean mowed the orchard/yard this past weekend along with most of the yard at the Ranch House. Grass was long so had to be cut on the highest setting. It'll need mowing again soon. Tried to mow the dog run but couldn't get the push mower to start.
Some thoughts about the orchard/yard:
* why not take down the fence between the two and make it one big compound/orchard? Also take down the fence over by the old bar-b-que pit.
* We need to do some more clean up in the yard. Saw up those tree limbs that are laying there. Trim or take out some of the trash trees. I can take the lead on that.
* What about calling it "Lorrayne's Orchard"; she always liked fresh peaches, and maybe we could get some bluebonnets and paintbrushes to come out in the Spring. Maybe if Rusty has some free time in Alaska he could put his artistic talents to work and maybe make or carve some type of sign to hang by the gate.

May '09 Cow Working
On Saturday, Dan, Doyle, Blaine, Kyle & Blake penned the cows and worked them all through the chute. We gave each cow Eprinex Pour-On for worms, lice, grubs and flies. We retagged one of our cows as No.1 and we retagged 2 of their cows. 5 calves needed working-all were tagged and vaccinated for Blackleg. 3 were bulls and were castrated. Blake did her first full castration with a knife and did a great job. All 21 calves on the ground were vaccinated for Blackleg, too. After working the cows we moved them all to the Fire Pasture and Terraced Pasture.
Dean pulled up during the post-cow work beer drinking and bullshit session. He had broken down at Corsicana the night before and had to spend the night there. Got the car fixed early Sat morning and pulled up just after we finished. we were sure he had been waiting down at Mill Creek road gate watching for the right time to drive in. Dan told a great story about one time when he and Dot took apples, oranges and a pecan pie down to Paul Krivacka, the old guy who lived by himself on Mill Creek road and who worked on our lawnmowers and tractor years ago. After knocking on the door for a while, they heard a "Hold on! I'm comin'
from inside. After a bit the door opened and there was Paul, stinkin' drunk. As he greeted them, he leaned against the wall for support, then finally just slid down the wall all the way to the floor. He was celebrating Christmas. They put him to bed and left.
We need to pen the cows in June to pull off our calves to sell. Should be 8 of them. They need another month of grass.
