ACL 2009: Todd Snider - "America's Favorite Pasttime"
Todd Snider tells the true story of Dock Ellis of the Pirates who pitched a no-hitter against the Padres while high on LSD during the 1970 season.
"three up three down for three straight innings
in a zero zero tie
as all those batters names come ringing
from a voice out of the sky
hallucinating halloween scenes
each new swing of the bat
his sinker looked like it was falling off a table
but nobody was hallucinating that"

Friday night about 7:00 drove over to David Lange's place in Zionsville right on the other side of 290 where he hosts a "jam" in his big garage (he's an 18 wheeler mechanic) every second Friday of the month. Dan,Dot, and Jimmy B. were there and we shot the breeze and drank beer. Again, pretty hot, but had a good time. Hope to go play with 'em someday. It's BYOBeer and they usually have some food and a jar for donations. Took some pics with my new cheapo digital camera.
They get started around 6:30 or 7:00 in the summer and play 'til about 10:00. Little earlier when the days are shorter.

Sale of Calves
Just a report on sale of calves. Market down a good bit, plus our calves were a little smaller than usual. Average weight for the 5 was 400 pounds. Highest brought $1.01, lowest brought $.90. Total proceeds about $1,750.
Also got check from Cornelius Ranch for $800 for our half of 40 bales of last year's hay.
Both have been deposited in bank.

July 4 Weekend
I'm still trying to cool off!
We had a good weekend. We got to Brenham about 7:30 Friday night and Blake and her friends had baked chicken, potatoes, salad, rolls on the table. We had Blake and Casey, Derek (Casey's brother) and a visiting vet student from Virginia Tech, Nate, Megan, L and I and Punk.
Saturday morning all but Nate, Megan and Punk went to Round Top. Big parade over 90 entries. Some were stupid-like a tree-stump removal company and a storage company just drove their cars through for the advertisiing. But, some old cars and tractors and funny floats. One had a very good band of old guys like us playing rock and roll.
Came home and cooked hot dogs for lunch, then all Blake's crowd headed to Austin. Nate wanted to gill chicken and sausage in the big barbeque, so I took him under my wing and we did that together. Turned out very good and Nate and Megan had lot's of meat to take back with them. Nate has a great future ahead of him!
We filled the cattle trough for swimming but it turned out to be Cash's water hole. Had 6 dogs there.
Punk did pretty good. I don't think he stumbles quite as much when walking, but memory still bad. At one point last night he said, "I need a hearing aid!" Nate and I heard it and I jumped on it immediately and asked if he was serious, but he said "No". He did say he was having a harder time hearing. Maybe we can try again on that hearing aid. He'd sure have more fun. But, he'd probably lose it.
Megan took down the old ash stump that we hooked the hammock to. All by herself. She layed in the hammock when Nate set it up and the whole stump went over-broke off at ground level. Pretty funny, but we were lucky it did not hit her when it came down. I hooked the hay fork up this morning and hauled it off. That was good for a laugh. We enjoyed having Nate and Megan there. They were very helpful and particularly attentive to making sure Punk got pills on time.
The A/C could not keep up this weekend, so I'm going to call the guy to come look at it this week. (Follow - up note: AC repair company found nothing really wrong, but added freon to both units. Dean will test next weekend.)
I traded weekends with Dean and he's scheduled to be there next weekend. Leigh and I go to the Astros game on Saturday evening.
